Lead Section Leader

Tenor Section Leader

Michelle started her barbershop career at the age of fifteen, singing Lead in her High School quartet, "A Pinch of Spice," put together by her Clay Center High School music director who happened to be the Manhattan, KS Men's Barbershop Chorus director, too!  She joined the Kansas City Chorus in 1986 after being "discovered" by another KC Chorus Sweet Adeline who happened to attend and cantor at the same Catholic Church!  Michelle has served on the Board, been a member of the Music and Choreography teams, Tenor Section Leader, KC Chorus Front Row member and YWIH Chorus Director.  She is a dual chorus member with the Wichita chorus.  At the Regional level Michelle has sung in four Championship Quartets (Plaza Lights - 1992, 93, 94; Fanfare - 2001; Zing! - 2002, 03, 04, 05; and Heat - 2013), winning a total of nine times.  She served as the Region 5 YWIH Co-Coordinator with her daughter, Mary Duncan.  At the International level, Michelle is a Queen of Harmony winning with the International Championship Quartet, Zing! in 2009 at Nashville, Tennessee.  She has been serving on the Coronet Club Board for several years, and currently sings Tenor with the International Finalist Quartet - HEAT.  She loves to coach quartets and choruses focusing on Showmanship, Expression, and Sound.  Barbershop is more than a hobby - it is a family affair!  Michelle's husband Grant, is also a barbershopper who sings with the CSD Championship Chorus Central Standard, and is a two-time CSD District Championship Quartet Baritone.  Her daughter Mary, has sung with the Region 5 Championship Quartet Legacy, and is now the Baritone of the former International Rising Star Championship Quartet, ClassRing, competing in Las Vegas this fall.  In her "other career" Michelle is a nurse at the Overland Park Regional Medical Center in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.  She loves taking care of the babies who occasionally hear a lullaby or two.

Baritone Section Leader

Kay Bromert has been a Sweet Adeline since 1976, and arranging Music for almost that long.  She first sang in the Ames, Iowa Chorus, later directing that chorus for two and a half years.  She was also a member of two or three quartets during that time as well.  After moving to Des Moines, Iowa, Kay sang with the Des Moines chorus for a couple of years.  In 1986, Kay and her family moved to Peru, South America, where she started a small prospective chorus. Unfortuantely after her move to a different mining camp, that group disbanded.  Since she was an arranger, Kay could continue honing her arranging skills without having to worry about four parts.  When Kay and her family came back to the States in 1996, she rejoined the Des Moines chorus (now Harmony Central), as well as singing in "Special Arrangement" quartet.  And now of course she has been a member of the Kansas City Chorus since 2013.  Kay became a Sweet Adelines Certified Music Arranger in 2011, and has had ten arrangements published by Sweet Adelines International, with another one in the works for the newest competition folio.  Currently Kay is one of three IMAP (International Music Arrangers Program) Coordinators, appointed this past spring as a part of this oversight group for the program.  All Certified and Master Arrangers are IMAP members - now with 35 CMA's and 7MMA's in the program. In 2013, Kay was accepted as a member into the Judging program and is currently an Approved Candidate Judge in the Music Category.  She is on the Music Team in the Harmony Central Chorus, and is now the Baritone section leader for the Kansas City Chorus.  Kay is also on the Region 5 Faculty, and in her spare time has been coaching some quartets.  Kay and her husband Ron have two married sons, two grandsons and two granddaughters.  She plays piano and organ for her church, plays in a handbell choir for another church, and plays golf whenever possible.  She loves the Kansas City area sports teams - the Chiefs and Royals, and is a huge KU fan.  And just for fun, Kay works part time for a marketing company whenever they have a project!

Assistant Baritone Section Leader / Assistant Director

Mary Olson - BassMARY OLSON

Bass Section Leader

Mary Olson, who grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, has always had a passion for singing.  She attributes a lot of that to her father, who always encouraged singing in the family, especially with everyone in the car!  Mary and three of her sisters experienced their first taste of Barbershop harmony in 2004 when they witnessed 4's Company, a zany Kansas City Chorus Quartet, do "their thing" at the grand opening of Zona Rosa.  They all became members of Sweet Adelines and the Kansas City Chorus that year, and as they say, "The rest is history!"  Mary is a member of the Front Row, sings Bass with the chorus and is on the Music and Choreography Teams.  She has served in a variety of other roles for the chorus, and has been Co-Chair of the annual Holiday Harmony Spectacular Show for the past ten years.  Mary sang Bass with the Hot Ticket Quartet and is super excited about currently singing in a new prospective quartet.  Valuing family over all else, Mary is blessed with nine children and fifteen wonderful grandchildren.  She has been a nurse for forty-four years and hopes to retire while she can still walk.  To top it all off, in her spare time, everyone is well aware that Mary is a HUGE Kansas City Royals fan!  She loves the Kansas City Chorus and is very excited about her new role as one of the Bass Section Leaders.
