About Our Artistic Director

Michelle H_2

Michelle Hunget

Michelle Hunget has been singing for a LONG time, beginning before her first quartet at the age of fourteen, when she attended Clay Center Community High School in her home town of Clay Center Kansas.  That quartet was called A Pinch of Spice, and they sang together for four years.  They were organized by Michelle's high school Choral Director, Ken Lang, who just happened to be the Manhattan,KS, Men's Barbershop Chorus Director at the time!  Michelle credits Ken for starting her BBS career, and he is proud to "claim" her as his student.  Michelle also traveled overseas touring Europe playing the French Horn with the Sound of America Honor Band and Choir the summer before her Freshman year in college.  She was a Marching Jayhawk playing her French Horn at the University of Kansas, and is reportedly a Huge Jayhawk fan!

That being said, Michelle's Dad, now eighty-five (that's 85!!) and still humming along, was a singer in his own right, has many wonderful memories of singing/woodshedding good ol' barbershop tunes with his dad and friends.  He sang through college and medical school in college choirs and civic/city/church groups.  Along with Michelle's Mom and Sister, they have always been great supporters of her quartets and the Kansas City Chorus - and are very excited about this next chapter in Michelle's Barbershop life.

Michelle has been a member of the Kansas City Chorus since 1986 - count them - 30 + years!  During that time, she has served as a Member of the Board of Directors (before the days of a Leadership Team) on the Choreography Team, as the Chorus Choreographer, on the Music Team as the Tenor Section Leader, Front Row Member, the Kansas City YWIH LaTiDah Chorus Director, and most recently, as Interim/Assistant Director.  At the Sweet Adelines Regional level, Michelle has been a Multiple Regional Quartet Champion (nine times), a member of a Multiple Regional Championship Chorus, and the Region 5 YWIH Coordinator (2012 - 2014).  At the Sweet Adelines International level, Michelle was a member of the 2010 International Championship Quartet Zing!  She has served on the Coronet Club Executive Board of Directors form 2012 to the present, the Queen's College Planning Committee in 2016, and has been accepted into the 2016 SAI Judge Applicant program in the Showmanship Category.  Michelle currently sings Tenor with the International Finalist Quartet HEAT.

In her other life, Michelle's husband Grant, a Barbershopper with two District Quartet Championships under his belt, currently sings with the Second Place International BHS Finalist Chorus, Central Standard.  Her son Steven is a Hospital Corpsman (Aviation Warfare Specialist) Petty Officer 3rd Class in the United States Navy.   He is married to the beautiful Sidney, and has an adorable daughter named Clara.  Michelle's youngest, Mary, is a Sophomore at the University of Kansas, and is the Baritone of the current 8th Place International Finalist Quartet, ClassRing.  She also just happens to be a Baritone in the Kansas City Chorus.  In her spare time, Michelle is a Registered Nurse at Overland Park Regional Medical Center in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.  She was previously in a Department Director/Leadership role at both KU Medical Center and Providence Medical Center from 1990-2013.

Michelle brings her expertise in Barbershop Harmony and enthusiasm for future accomplishments to the Kansas City Chorus - a perfect fit!  Our future outlook on growth and excellence for the Kansas City Chorus looks bright indeed with Michelle guiding the way.
